The retina

Specialized care for complex retinal conditions.

The retina is the thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It turns light into signals that the brain reads as images. Its centre, the macula, gives the sharp vision needed for reading and recognising faces.

Retinal conditions often need specialised imaging and, in some cases, timely treatment. Dr. Yüksel’s work focuses on these conditions and on the surgical techniques used to treat them.

Frequently asked questions

What does a retina specialist treat?

A retina specialist diagnoses and treats diseases of the retina and the vitreous, the gel that fills the eye. These include retinal detachment and retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and bleeding inside the eye. Treatment can include laser, injections into the eye or vitreoretinal surgery.

When should retinal detachment be evaluated urgently?

Seek eye care the same day if you notice a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light, or a shadow or curtain spreading over part of your vision. These can be signs of a retinal tear or detachment. Go to the nearest eye emergency service where you are; do not wait to travel.

Can I receive a diagnosis online before travelling?

No. Before your visit we can review your situation and previous reports to plan the appointment, but a diagnosis and a treatment recommendation are only made after an examination in Tirana.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Previous eye reports and scans, such as OCT images, a list of your current medicines and your glasses. The pupils are usually dilated for a retinal examination, so your vision stays blurred for a few hours and you should not drive afterwards.

How long should I plan to stay in Tirana?

It depends on the examination and on whether treatment is needed. After some retinal operations flying is not allowed for a period, for example while a gas bubble remains in the eye. Your travel plans are discussed with you before any procedure.
